Endeavor Preserves Century-old Oaks at the Domain · 11.29.07
November 29, 2007, Austin, Texas – To enhance the appeal of The Domain, a new large-scale urban community in north Austin, Endeavor Real Estate Group recently relocated nine Live Oak trees out of the path of construction, ensuring careful preservation of the 50,000–150,000 pound arbors. The largest of the trees are nearly a century old, providing a beautiful canopy of shade during the hot Texas summers.
“We’re so grateful for the capable know-how and care demonstrated by Environmental Design”, said Endeavor
Managing Principal Kirk Rudy of the Texas-based company who moved the trees. “They meticulously executed a well-crafted plan, staged over the course of several weeks, to ensure the health and longevity of these beautiful Live Oaks.”
Endeavor has plans to add Nordstrom and Whole Foods Market, plus over 500,000 square feet of retail by fall 2011. Construction of the project’s first new office building, Domain Gateway, will begin next month, adding 175,000 square feet of Class A office space. Ultimately, The Domain will feature over 2 million square feet of retail, dining and entertainment, three hotels, 3.5 million square feet of office space and 4,500 residential units (many above ground-floor retail). All will be housed in an eco-friendly, open-air setting (completely accessible on foot), with future commuter rail connections to downtown and the rapidly-growing communities to the north.
To carefully move the Live Oaks, Initially, a trench was cut around the root ball of the trees sized to each tree’s
canopy. The root balls were then isolated with geo-fabric and plastic to maintain the integrity of the root system and to accommodate the liquid applications of fertilizers and stimulators. Lift platforms were then bored under the root ball of the trees and metal pipes were placed below, with lifting beams welded to the platforms to ensure a uniform loading during the transport of the trees. The trees were lifted from their locations by a large crane and then loaded on flat bed trailers for transport to their new locations. The Live Oaks were carefully positioned in their new locations with the same orientation as their original homes, to minimize adjustment and shock to each tree.
The trees are consistently watered, fertilized, and monitored to ensure their continued health. All nine of the relocated native trees are thriving in their new homes, ensuring many more years of beauty and shade for the residents, workers and visitors of The Domain.
