Reclaimed Materials

Building 60 on the former IBM campus was recently demolished to make way for a new 9-acre park, multi-family buildings and roadways at The Domain.  Several other buildings in the former industrial park have already been removed, with more being dismantled over the next few years.

An unusually high percentage of recycled materials, 99.85%, were salvaged from Building 60, with some being re-used on-site.  For example, demolished concrete is being processed for use as a structural-fill around the site, and reclaimed glass is crushed and ground to provide jogging path material which will be mixed with decomposed granite.

Asphalt stripped from surface parking lots is transported to local asphalt plants for re-use in new roadways around Central Texas.  Copper and aluminum wiring, which is in hot demand due to increased commodity prices, is also recycled locally, as is steel reclaimed from the old buildings.

A large amount of materials salvaged from demolished buildings is being stored for use as public art to be displayed throughout The Domain – a nod to the history of the once bustling technology campus, and a look ahead to what The Domain holds for decades to come.
